Obverse description Central field features a circular seal depicting a cross quartering the field with a granulated background, surrounded by a ring of twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a circle. Below the seal, the denomination '2 €' is rendered in large numerals and the euro symbol, with the date '1972' beneath. The circular legend 'CONFŒDERATIO EUROPÆA' runs along the periphery in bold Latin characters. Small mint marks appear to either side of the lower field.

Reverse description Draped bust of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, facing slightly right, wearing a plumed hat and elaborately embroidered armor with a decorated collar. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the costume. The legend 'CAROLUS QUINTUS' arcs along the upper periphery, while the birth and death years '1500 - 1558' appear in the lower exergue, flanked by decorative dot ornaments on either side.
