Obverse description A fully armored knight stands facing right in the field, the divided date appearing on either side of the figure; the knight raises a sword in his right hand while his left hand grasps a bundle of seven arrows, symbolizing the union of the Dutch provinces. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin legend terminating in the Middelburg mintmark (castle symbol) running in the outer annulus. The vigorous, somewhat crude rendering of the figure is characteristic of the hammered technique employed at the Zeeland mint during this period.
