Joseph II's Hungarian ducats occupy an awkward political moment: he never agreed to a Hungarian coronation, refusing to be bound by the constitutional constraints it would impose, which meant he technically ruled as an uncrowned king. Hungarian estates resented this bitterly. The ducat series continued regardless, as gold coinage was too commercially essential to suspend over constitutional grievance.
He rescinded nearly all of his own reforms on his deathbed in 1790, but the coins remained in circulation long after.
