| Obverse description | Central field features the quartered heraldic shield of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, surmounted by a pontifical mitre flanked by a crozier and a processional cross, with the date 1568 divided across the lower quarters of the shield. The four quarters of the shield display alternating lions rampant and an eagle, representing the arms of the see of Salzburg. A circular Latin legend surrounds the composition, reading IOA IA D G AR EPS SALZ A S LE 15 68, identifying Archbishop Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi by his abbreviated titles. The overall design reflects the high-relief hammered craftsmanship characteristic of 16th-century German ecclesiastical gold coinage. |
