Obverse description A eagle in flight, wings displayed, soaring leftward toward a radiant sun, carrying the small ducal arms of Saxony in its beak. A two-line Latin commemorative legend arcs above and around the central device, referencing the birthday of Johann Ernst, Duke of Saxony, and invoking the motif of the eagle's renewal of youth. The composition is executed in the vigorous Baroque engraving style characteristic of early seventeenth-century German ducal coinage.
