Additional information

This piece commemorates the Swedish king's celebrated entry into Mainz in December 1631, when Gustavus Adolphus occupied the city during his campaign against the Catholic League. The Archbishop of Mainz, Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg's successor Anselm Casimir Wambolt von Umstadt, had fled before the Swedish advance — making the city's own mint the instrument of a conqueror's propaganda.

Ahlström lists only a handful of confirmed specimens, and the Fr#1920 designation places it firmly among the rarest Swedish-period German occupation issues.
