Obverse description Draped bust of Prince-Bishop Frederick Charles of Schönborn facing right, wearing a wig with long curled locks and clerical vestments with lace detail. The effigy is rendered in high relief in a baroque style characteristic of early 18th-century German coinage. The surrounding legend reads FRID. CARL. D.G. EP. BAMB. & HER. B. & R. I. PR. OD., running from lower left around the top of the coin. The border is formed by a fine ring of milled beads.

Additional information

Frederick Charles von Schönborn held the remarkable distinction of ruling simultaneously as both Prince-Bishop of Würzburg and Prince-Bishop of Bamberg from 1729, a personal union that concentrated an unusual degree of ecclesiastical and territorial power in a single hand. His reign coincided with an ambitious building program — he employed Balthasar Neumann and effectively bankrolled the Residenz at Würzburg, one of the grandest Baroque palace complexes north of the Alps. Gold issues from his episcopate are relatively scarce; the diocese was not a prolific producer of high-denomination coinage.
