Obverse description Facing busts of Ferdinand II and Isabella I, conjoined and facing one another in profile, both crowned with ornate Gothic crowns, occupying the central field. Between the two crowned busts, a small crowned shield is depicted at the base. The effigies are rendered in a late medieval hammered style with fine drapery detail visible on the shoulders of both monarchs. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central design, reading FERDINANDVS ELISABET DEI GRACIA REX ARA, separated by cross stops.
