Obverse description Centrally placed oval shield of Bern arms, displaying the walking bear of Bern to sinister on a diagonally divided field, set within an ornate baroque cartouche with scrollwork and foliate flourishes. The shield is surrounded by a circular Latin legend reading + BENEDICTVS . SIT . IEHOVA . DEVS . V, divided by the cartouche elements. The overall composition is characteristic of late 17th-century Swiss municipal coinage, with finely detailed relief work on the heraldic bear and cartouche ornaments.

DVCAT. / REIPVBLI / CAE. / BERNEN / SIS. 1679 displayed in full within a wreath of two palm or laurel branches tied at the base, the date 1679 appearing in the lowest line.
