Obverse description The crowned shield of Bern, bearing the city's heraldic bear rampant to the left on a diagonally divided field, is displayed centrally within a beaded inner circle. A double-headed imperial eagle with spread wings surmounts the shield. The surrounding Latin legend reads SIT : NOM : DNI + BENEDICTV, invoking a blessing upon the name of the Lord, and runs between the beaded circle and the milled coin edge.
