Reverse description A recessed square cartouche at center contains a five-line Latin inscription reading MON · AVR · HAMBVR / GENSIS · / AD LEGEM / IMPERII, attesting that the coin was struck to Imperial standard. Above the cartouche, the Hamburg castle arms — a white three-towered castle on a red field — is depicted as an architectural device. Elaborate symmetrical foliate and scroll ornaments flank the cartouche on both sides, filling the field to the milled border.
