Obverse description A basilisk, the heraldic symbol of Basel, stands as supporter to an ornate oval shield bearing the arms of the city — a diagonally divided field with a black crozier on white — set upon a latticed cartouche base. Flanking and below the central arms are eight smaller oval escutcheons displaying the bailiff coats of arms of the city's subject territories, arranged in symmetrical fashion. The circumferential legend reads DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE, with the date 1743 integrated into the legend and divided by stops at the base. The engraving exhibits the refined baroque style characteristic of Swiss city coinage of the mid-eighteenth century.
