Reverse description A half-length crowned figure of the Madonna is depicted frontally, holding the Christ Child in one arm and a scepter in the other, standing above a crescent moon — an iconographic scheme drawn from the Woman of the Apocalypse. The composition is characteristic of the Marian devotional imagery widely employed on Hamburg gold coinage of the seventeenth century. The circumferential Latin legend, rendered in the field around the central figure, concludes with the date of issue positioned at the end of the inscription.
