Reverse description A left-facing little owl (Athene noctua), the ancient symbol of the goddess Athena, stands upright in the centre of the field, faithfully evoking the celebrated type first used on Athenian silver tetradrachms of the 5th century B.C. The denomination numeral 2 appears to the left of the owl, and the Greek legend ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ along with the engraver's abbreviated signature Ν. ΠΕΡ. appears to the right.

Additional information

The 1973 date places this coin squarely in the terminal phase of the Greek military junta — the regime was overthrown in July 1974 following the Cyprus crisis and the Turkish invasion. By 1973 the junta itself had fractured: Papadopoulos was ousted in a November coup by the harder-line Ioannidis faction, meaning coins dated this year were struck under two effectively distinct governments within a single calendar year.

The nickel brass alloy was a departure from the aluminum coinage the junta had issued earlier in its rule.
