The Doume is a local complementary currency launched in the Puy-de-Dôme département of Auvergne, one of several dozen such schemes operating in France under the framework enabled by the 2014 Loi sur l'Économie Sociale et Solidaire, which for the first time gave formal legal recognition to local exchange currencies in French law. Notes are issued against an equivalent deposit in euros held in a partner ethical bank, typically the Crédit Coopératif.
Conversion back to euros incurs a fee — a deliberate friction designed to keep the currency circulating locally rather than draining back into the conventional economy.
