| Obverse description | Intaglio-printed vignette at left portrays Major General Winfield Scott Hancock in military uniform, rendered in fine line engraving against a lathe-work guilloche border. The central field carries ornate letterpress text reading 'UNITED STATES' in large gothic script above 'TWO SILVER DOLLARS', framed by intricate geometric underprint work. Two large numeral '2' counters appear at left and right within ornate engine-turned rosette surrounds, while the words 'TWO', 'DOLLARS', 'UNITED STATES' and 'SILVER CERTIFICATE' are interwoven diagonally through the intricate geometric latticework. The overall composition is dense with fine-line engraving, floral ornaments, and interlocking scrollwork characteristic of the large-format Treasury issues of the 1880s. |
