Palau has issued commemorative silver under licensing agreements with various automotive brands since the early 2000s, producing pieces for collectors rather than circulation. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL itself needs little introduction — the gullwing coupe debuted at the 1954 New York Auto Show and was, at the time, the fastest production car in the world, its fuel-injected straight-six a direct adaptation of the W194 racing engine that won Le Mans in 1952.
