J. B. Laliberté was a Quebec City furrier and outfitter with roots going back to the 1870s, and this 2 Dollar note is a merchant scrip token rather than a banknote in any formal sense — issued as a store credit instrument, almost certainly as part of a promotional or loyalty scheme rather than out of any monetary necessity. By 1986, Canadian merchant scrip had no legal standing and no regulatory framework; these circulated entirely on the goodwill of the issuing business.
The small dimensions place it closer to a gift certificate than to currency tradition. Surviving examples tend to be unfolded and uncirculated, suggesting redemption rates were high or distribution was limited.
