Reverse description A traditional I-Kiribati maneaba (community meeting house) with a deeply thatched roof is depicted in the central field, its open sides revealing vertical support posts beneath the eaves. A large ornate shell is positioned prominently to the lower left of the structure. The commemorative legend arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination is inscribed along the lower rim, each separated by raised dot stops.

Additional information

Kiribati adopted its constitution and declared independence from Britain on July 12, 1979, the same date that also marked a deliberate administrative break from its former identity as the Gilbert Islands. The 1989 issue falls within the first decade of that independent coinage program, a period when the young nation was still establishing its monetary infrastructure with support from the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, which struck the early Kiribati series.
