| Additional information |
Brunei hosted the 20th Southeast Asian Games in August 1999 — the first and, to date, only time the sultanate has done so. Organizing the event required considerable infrastructure investment for a nation of under 400,000 people, and the commemorative coinage issued around it served a clear promotional function for the government. The games themselves were notable for a doping controversy that led to several medal revocations after the fact.
