His facsimile signature appears beneath the portrait, accompanied by his life dates '1938–1980'. A Cyrillic inscription arcing across the field bears a poignant line from his works. The overall composition, engraved by Andrey Batura, combines selective color application with polished relief work in .999 fine silver. |

Vladimir Vysotsky died in 1980 — during the Moscow Olympics, when Soviet authorities were too preoccupied with the Games to manage public grief. His funeral drew hundreds of thousands to the streets of Moscow despite receiving no official announcement. Niue's commemorative program has long licensed cultural figures well outside its own national history, and Vysotsky, a poet and actor whose recordings circulated as illegal magnetic tape copies throughout the USSR, is an unusual but defensible subject for such an issue.
The coin was released on the 30th anniversary of his death.
