Reverse description Left-facing bust of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish-American military hero, depicted in period military dress with a ruffled collar, rendered in fine sculptural relief against a polished gold field. The portrait captures Kościuszko in a neoclassical style with flowing hair. Below the bust, in an elegant cursive script, appears the facsimile signature Kościuszko, serving as both legend and artistic motif.

Additional information

Kościuszko led the 1794 insurrection against the Partitioning Powers — Russia and Prussia — in a last-ditch effort to preserve Polish sovereignty, and was captured at the Battle of Maciejowice that same year. His subsequent imprisonment in Saint Petersburg and later voluntary exile cemented his status across two continents, having previously served as a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

Niue's licensing of its sovereignty for gold bullionette issues of this type was a commercial arrangement with private minting interests, not a reflection of any diplomatic or historical tie to the subject.
