| Additional information |
Sir Arthur Lewis, born in Saint Lucia in 1915, received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979 — the first Black person awarded a Nobel in a category other than Peace. His dual-sector model of economic development, articulated in a landmark 1954 paper, became foundational doctrine for postcolonial development policy across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issued this commemorative in the same decade that several OECS member states were actively wrestling with the structural adjustment prescriptions that Lewis's theoretical framework had, in part, helped inspire.
