Additional information

Robert Falcon Scott reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912 — exactly a century before this coin's issue date — only to find Roald Amundsen's Norwegian tent already standing there. Scott and his four companions died on the return journey, the last three within 11 miles of a supply depot. Niue has issued commemorative silver in this format extensively through the New Zealand Mint, functioning largely as a licensing arrangement rather than a domestic monetary program.
