Additional information

The toonie's 2006 production year falls within the period when the Royal Canadian Mint was quietly refining its bimetallic bonding process after a well-publicized early flaw: the first-generation toonies issued from 1996 onward had a tendency for the aluminum bronze core to pop cleanly out of the nickel ring under cold conditions — a fitting irony for a Canadian winter coin. By 2006, the core-retention problem had been substantially addressed through improved edge serration and interference-fit tolerances on the mating surfaces.
