| Reverse description | The bimetallic reverse depicts two Inuit figures dressed in traditional parkas flanking a large qulliq (stone oil lamp), whose oval basin occupies the aluminium bronze centre of the coin and is shown in bold relief. The figures are rendered in fine detail within the nickel ring, with the designer's initials G.A. visible to the left of centre in the field. Below the central design, the bilingual legend reads NUNAVUT accompanied by its Inuktitut syllabic equivalent, with CANADA 2 DOLLARS inscribed along the lower rim. The composition was designed by artist gósta åberg and commemorates the creation of Canada's newest territory on April 1, 1999. This reverse die, intended for a standard Nunavut commemorative coin, was erroneously paired with a standard toonie obverse die, creating the mule variety. |
