Obverse description Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after Ian Rank-Broadley, set within a raised rectangular cartouche at centre, with the engraver's initials IRB incuse below the truncation. Flanking the cartouche on both sides are sweeping, intertwined ribbon-like drapery elements extending across the polished field, rendered in high relief. The legend ELIZABETH II / NIUE ISLAND / 2 DOLLARS appears below the portrait within the cartouche, with the date 2020 inscribed in the lower field outside the cartouche. The fineness and weight notation AG 999/31,1G is inscribed vertically to the left of the cartouche, and the Czech Mint monogram appears to the lower right.

Additional information

Ludmila of Bohemia was martyred in 921 AD on the orders of her own daughter-in-law, Drahomíra, who resented her influence over the young Wenceslaus — later canonized himself as the patron saint of Bohemia. Ludmila was strangled with her own veil at Tetín castle. She became the first Bohemian Christian martyr and was canonized within decades of her death.

The "Grandmother" subtitle refers to her role in secretly continuing Wenceslaus's Christian education after Drahomíra seized the regency and banned it. Niue has issued this piece as part of a broader series on medieval saints under its ongoing commemorative program with the New Zealand Mint.
