Niue has issued licensed pop-culture coins since the 1990s under revenue-sharing arrangements with rights holders, using New Zealand's currency framework to produce legal tender pieces that function almost entirely as collectibles. This Star Wars issue was part of a 2011 series produced by the New Zealand Mint on Niue's behalf, with intellectual property licensed through Lucasfilm prior to Disney's acquisition of the franchise the following year.
