Niue has become one of the Pacific's most prolific bullion and commemorative issuers not through any domestic monetary need — the island's population hovers around 1,600 — but through a licensing arrangement that lets the New Zealand-administered territory lend its sovereign name to coins produced entirely for the collector market. This piece commemorates Magellan's circumnavigation expedition of 1519–1522, which he did not survive; he was killed in the Philippines in April 1521, leaving Juan Sebastián Elcano to complete the voyage with 18 survivors from an original crew of roughly 270.
