Niue has operated a prolific licensed coin program since the 1990s, issuing legal tender pieces under agreements with major intellectual property holders — Star Wars among them. The "Droid" designation places this within a multi-coin series released under a Lucasfilm licensing arrangement, timed to renewed franchise interest ahead of Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion.
Niue's GDP at the time of issue was roughly $10 million USD. The coins were never intended for circulation on the island.
