Niue has operated as a prolific licensing vehicle for commemorative silver issues since the 1990s, with New Zealand managing its foreign affairs and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand providing its actual circulating currency. The two-dollar denomination here is nominal — no one has ever tendered one of these in Alofi.
Christ Pantokrator iconography derives from Byzantine mosaic and fresco traditions, the most famous example being the 6th-century apse mosaic at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai. That specific rendering became a theological touchstone: the asymmetrical face was interpreted by later scholars as simultaneously depicting divine judgment and divine mercy.
