Additional information

The Battle of Messines in June 1917 was preceded by the detonation of 19 large mines packed beneath German lines — one of the largest planned explosions in military history to that point. The British Second Army under General Herbert Plumer had spent nearly two years tunneling. When the mines went off at 3:10 a.m. on June 7th, the blast was reportedly heard as far away as London and Dublin.

Niue's bullion-adjacent commemorative program has issued dozens of large-format gold-plated pieces tied to WWI anniversaries, with this striking 110g example among the heavier entries in that run.
