Niue has long served as a licensing vehicle for the New Zealand-based New World Mint, producing large-format commemoratives with no organic connection to the events they depict. The Battle of Crete — May–June 1941 — was one of the first airborne invasions in military history, and Germany's pyrrhic victory cost the Fallschirmjäger such catastrophic casualties that Hitler never authorized a major paratroop assault again.
The gold plating on copper format is standard for this commercial series.
