Additional information

The brumby occupies a genuinely contested place in Australian land management — feral horse populations in the Snowy Mountains and elsewhere have been the subject of federal culling programs, environmental litigation, and competing heritage legislation for decades. The 2000 amendment to the New South Wales Wild Horse Heritage Act and subsequent fights over the Alpine National Park populations made the brumby simultaneously a conservation target and a protected cultural symbol depending on which government was speaking.

Perth Mint's choice to commemorate the animal in 2022 landed squarely in that unresolved argument.
