Additional information

Perth Mint's sub-gram gold bullion program was aimed squarely at entry-level precious metal buyers priced out of full-ounce product. Half-gram pieces in this series were legal tender under Australian law, with the nominal two-dollar face value underwritten by the Commonwealth — a formality that costs nothing when spot gold sits roughly 3,000 times higher than the denomination.

The frilled neck lizard had already achieved international recognition after appearing on the Australian one-cent coin from 1966 until decimal coinage was rationalised in 1992.
