Reverse description A naturalistic depiction of a kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) perched upon a rocky branch, rendered in high relief against a highly polished mirror field. A small gilt Spade Guinea privy mark appears to the right of the bird, referencing the 1798 British gold spade guinea. The arc legend THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA and 2 OZ. 999 SILVER flank the central device, with the date 1996 inscribed in the lower field. The abbreviated Latin inscription M · B · F · ET · H · REX · F · D · B · ET · LD · 8 · R · I · T · ET · E · referring to the original spade guinea legend, and the dates 1798 and 1996 appear around the reverse. A beaded border frames the entire design, with a mintmark visible near the base.
