The 1998 Kookaburra is part of a bullion series Perth Mint launched in 1990, deliberately designed to compete with the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle in the international silver bullion market. Each annual release carries a new kookaburra design — a deliberate strategy to drive collector demand on top of pure metal value, effectively running a bullion and numismatic program simultaneously under a single product line.
The two-ounce format used here was one of several sizes issued that year, ranging from half-ounce to thirty-ounce pieces.
