Additional information

Gutenberg's movable-type press, developed in Mainz around 1450, is the hook here — but the specific rationale for a Pacific island territory issuing a commemorative on his behalf is purely commercial. Niue has functioned for decades as a licensing jurisdiction for foreign bullion and collector coin programs, with the New Zealand government providing monetary backing while private minting houses drive the actual product decisions. This piece almost certainly originates from a European mint operating under that arrangement.

Gutenberg himself died in 1468, reportedly stripped of his workshop by his financier Johann Fust through a lawsuit that remains one of history's more consequential legal disputes over intellectual property.
