Niue has operated as a licensing vehicle for the New Zealand Mint since the 1990s, issuing collector coins under its nominal sovereignty while retaining none of the minting infrastructure itself. The Star Wars licensing agreement — held by the New Zealand Mint — has produced dozens of issues across multiple monarchs, simply updating the obverse authority as reigns change. Charles III's accession in September 2022 triggered a mechanical retooling of the entire back-catalog for reissue.
The Force Awakens was released in December 2015, the first Disney-era film following the 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion.
