Niue has operated as a prolific licensing vehicle for foreign coin programs since the 1990s, with the New Zealand government administering its currency while the island's name and legal tender status are effectively rented to private minting operations. This particular issue is part of an ongoing Marvel collaboration produced by the New Zealand Mint, one of the more commercially active programs of its kind.
