The Battle of Binh Ba took place in June 1969 in Phuoc Tuy Province, where Australian forces of D Company, 5 RAR engaged a substantial North Vietnamese and Viet Cong force that had occupied the village. The fighting was unusually close-quarters for Australian operations in Vietnam, lasting two days and resulting in significant enemy casualties — figures that remained disputed for decades in both military and political circles back in Australia.
Niue's practice of licensing its sovereignty for commemorative coin programs means this piece has no meaningful connection to either the battle or the Australian veterans it nominally honors.
