The 1924 Chamonix Games are recognized retroactively as the first Winter Olympics — the IOC only granted them that status in 1925, after the fact. This centenary issue marks exactly 100 years since those inaugural competitions, where 16 nations sent 258 athletes to compete in 16 events across snow and ice for the first time under a unified international framework. Niue has long used its treaty relationship with New Zealand to issue commemorative gold in fractional weights, a practice that generates hard currency for an island of roughly 1,500 people.
