Obverse description Black intaglio print on white cotton paper. At left, an oval vignette contains a uniformed military portrait bust facing three-quarters right, with a large numeral '2' at lower left; at centre, a fine line-engraved scenic vignette portrays figures in a canoe on water. 'DOMINION OF CANADA' in ornate lettering occupies the upper centre, with 'OTTAWA, JULY 2, 1897' along the upper margin, 'TWO DOLLARS' as a straight inscription near the lower centre, and serial number and two signature lines below.

Reverse description Printed in red-brown on white cotton paper, the reverse is structured around two large circular guilloche rosettes at left and right, each enclosing the numeral '2', with a central oval vignette in fine engraving occupying the field between them. 'DOMINION OF CANADA' is lettered in an arc at the upper centre, and 'TWO DOLLARS' appears as a straight inscription along the lower margin. The composition is framed by dense lathe-work geometric borders throughout.
