The Chupanids — a Mongol successor dynasty ruling northwestern Iran as vassals of the Ilkhanate — were in acute political collapse by 1349. Hasan Kuchak, the last significant Chupanid ruler, had been assassinated the previous year, and the dynasty was effectively finished within months of this coin's production. That this piece was struck at all reflects the administrative inertia of a mint operation continuing to function while the political authority behind it dissolved.
