Additional information

Kelantan's silver dirham issue of 2010 was the product of a deliberate political statement by the state government under Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz, who pushed to reintroduce Islamic gold and silver coinage as a challenge to Malaysia's federal monetary framework. The coins were not legal tender under Malaysian federal law — making their circulation technically a grey area — but were promoted for use in trade among Muslims as a religious and economic alternative to the ringgit.

The World Coin catalog reference X#5 places this squarely in the "non-circulating or local issue" category, which understates how actively Kelantan promoted actual commerce with these pieces.
