| Reverse description | Large portrait of Kurt Schumacher, founding chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and first Leader of the Opposition in the Bundestag, depicted facing slightly to the right with strongly modeled facial features. The circumscribed legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND runs along the upper border, punctuated by raised dots. The dates 1949 and 1979 appear in the lower field flanking the portrait, the latter marking the centenary of Schumacher's birth.
