| Obverse description | The Federal Eagle of Germany, rendered in a stylised heraldic design with wings displayed and talons prominent, occupies the centre of the field. The legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination 2 DEUTSCHE MARK curves along the lower periphery. The date of issue appears above the eagle, and the mint mark is positioned at the lower left, between the eagle's talons and the denomination numeral. |

Ludwig Erhard served as West Germany's Economics Minister from 1949 and is credited with engineering the Wirtschaftswunder — the postwar economic recovery built on currency reform and the abolition of price controls, largely against Allied advice. He was commemorated on this denomination beginning in 1988, the year after his death.
The 2 Mark series had a complicated history of portrait subjects, with earlier issues honoring figures such as Max Planck and Konrad Adenauer. Erhard's addition came late in the series' life; production continued through 2001, the year Germany's coinage transitioned to euro preparation.
