Obverse description Central field features the state emblem of the German Democratic Republic: a hammer and compass superimposed, encircled by a wreath of rye ears bound at the base with a ribbon. The emblem is rendered in bold relief against a smooth field. The circular legend reads 'DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE' along the upper arc and 'REPUBLIK' along the lower arc, flanked by two small five-pointed stars at either side of the lower legend.

Reverse description A large, boldly struck numeral '2' dominates the centre of the field, flanked symmetrically on either side by sprays of oak leaves in low relief. The denomination legend 'DEUTSCHE MARK' is inscribed in two lines beneath the numeral, with the date '1957' appearing in the lower exergue. The mint mark 'A' for the Berlin Mint is positioned at the top of the field above the numeral.
