Comments

The Deutsche Notenbank was the central bank established in the Soviet occupation zone, and this 1948 issue was part of the currency reform that split the German monetary system in two. The Western zones introduced the Deutsche Mark under Allied supervision in June 1948; the Soviet zone followed days later with its own reform, initially using overprinted Reichsmark notes before transitioning to purpose-printed issues like this one.

With just over twelve million printed, this is among the lower-circulation denominations of the series — not scarce in absolute terms, but the 2 Mark face value saw harder everyday use than higher denominations, and survivors in decent condition are proportionally fewer.
