Obverse description Central crowned Portuguese royal arms, comprising a shield quartered with castles and five bezants (quinas), surmounted by a royal crown, all set within a plain inner circle. The shield is flanked on either side without the customary quadrifoliate ornaments. The circumferential Latin legend reads IOANNES IIII D G REX PORTV, separated by pellet stops, running along the outer beaded border of this irregularly-shaped hammered gold flan.
